Brachial Plexus Injuries

The brachial plexus is a group of nerves reaching from the spinal cord in the neck through armpit region and into the arms. If a child’s head or neck is twisted or the shoulder is stretched during a vaginal delivery, the brachial plexus may be damaged. This can cause partial or full paralysis of the arm on the affected side of the body. This paralysis due to brachial plexus injury is also called Erb’s Palsy.

How does brachial plexus injury relate to birth injuries and medical malpractice? Brachial plexus injuries most often occur in large infants and vaginal deliveries. If a doctor does not properly maneuver the baby through the birth canal or does not recommend or perform a cesarean section and instead insists upon vaginal delivery, this can cause undue trauma to the brachial plexus. This could have been avoided had the doctor been more aware or exercised proper caution and care during the woman’s pregnancy, labor and delivery.
