Brain Injuries
Is your child suffering from a serious brain injury such as cerebral palsy? Did your child sustain a birth injury that resulted in brain damage or developmental delays? A birth injury attorney at Tracey Law Firm can help.
A brain injury may occur at any point during the labor or delivery of a child. A difficult delivery may result in serious brain injury if the doctor does not recommend a cesarean section in time or improperly uses forceps or a vacuum in a vaginal delivery. There are two types of brain injuries that a child may suffer at birth:
- Progressive Brain Injury: often genetic or related to developmental issues, a progressive brain injury will worsen over time.
- Non-Progressive Brain Injury: usually caused by a specific incident or injury during birth, a non-progressive brain injury will not worsen. The symptoms and evidence of injury, however, may become more apparent as the child ages. Cerebral palsy is one example of this type of brain injury.
How Brain Injuries Occur
Brain injuries (and birth injuries in general) are more likely to occur in large infants, or breech or complicated deliveries. It is important to remember that your obstetrician, doctor or nurse still has an obligation to provide a standard level of care even when a delivery or pregnancy is complicated. A doctor needs to be able to think quickly and make important decisions regarding how to deliver the child – including deciding whether a c-section is necessary.
During childbirth, a brain injury may occur because the baby does not receive enough oxygen to his or her brain. The stress of passing through the birth canal, a prolapsed umbilical cord, umbilical cord wrapped around the neck or a delayed c-section may all cause the brain to not get enough oxygen.
