It is important to remember that your obstetrician, doctor or nurse still has an obligation to provide a standard level of care even when a delivery or pregnancy is complicated. A doctor needs to be able to think quickly and make important decisions regarding how to deliver the child – including deciding whether a c-section is necessary.

During childbirth, a brain injury may occur because the baby does not receive enough oxygen to his or her brain. The stress of passing through the birth canal, a prolapsed umbilical cord, umbilical cord wrapped around the neck or a delayed c-section may all cause the brain to not get enough oxygen.
